Question:
What is a "PC" clearance/marker lamp and where should I use it?

Answer:
“PC” is a rating by SAE designated to specific clearance and marker lamps. A PC-rated lamp can be seen easily from both sides, as well as from the front. This lamp should always be installed on trailers that use only one clearance and marker lamp in the front corner. That one lamp is mounted on a 45-degree angle so it is visible from the front and side.

Not all clearance and marker lamps have a “PC” rating. If you use one that does not have this rating, your driver can be ticketed. In 2000, NHTSA issued an interpretation that allows for the PC-rated lamp to be mounted on the front side of trailers, rather than the corner. In this case, the light must be visible from the front. Therefore, the PC-rated lamp could not be used in a sunken rail or a corner that is built up so that it would block the light to the front.
